Detailed Description+

Assesses figural short-term and long-term memory.
This special ability test assesses memory for figural material with free recall and using a learning paradigm that tests the increase in learning after repeated presentation. The test also makes it possible to test short- and long-term retention and recognition. The FGT thus enables multiple facets of episodic figural long-term memory to be measured. The test is used in clinical neuropsychology.

Test forms+

S11: Short form A
S12: Short form B

Task+

The FGT consists of several parts. The first part comprises five learning and reproduction runs in which either 9 or 12 figures (depending on test form) are presented repeatedly. These figures always consist of a square area in which one or more lines or dashes have been drawn. Immediately afterwards respondents must reproduce as many of the displayed figures as they can. The second part of the test follows after a short break. This part calls for free reproduction of the figures without any further presentation of them. The third part of the test is administered after a 30-minute break; this involves free reproduction after a long delay and forced-choice recognition of the figures.

Scoring+

The following main variables are scored:

  • Learning total: This variable is an overall measure of an individual’s figural learning ability.
  • Short-term delayed recall: This variable is a measure of the short-term retention of figural material after a break of approx. 5 min.
  • Long-term delayed recall: This variable measures the retention of figural material after a longer break of approx. 30 min.
  • Recognition: This variable is a measure of the recognition of learned figural material.

The subsidiary variables provide information about short- and long-term learning ability and attention span.
